BACCH News - Spring 2004 (PDF file 1.15MB)

Editor's report on this issue

Since becoming Editor, I have been receiving a number of e-mail letters, and they are developing a common theme. This edition is very much about “Getting Cinderella to the Ball” or “How children’s health doesn’t really matter.” Pat Daymond’s letter on pg13 illustrates the difficulty our colleagues have in understanding a ‘Health’, rather than ‘Sickness’ model of medical practise. We are still a ‘Cinderella Service’, even despite our ever-increasing workload; BACCH members don’t need to be told this, but our BACCH News does reach a wider audience, and Sir Ian Kennedy will be receiving a copy this time, with a request for comments!

The research articles starting on page 10 reflect the range and scope of our work. Whilst BACCH News is not a scientific journal, I hope that by including them we can generate discussion, not only on “scientific” treatment, but also on the management of children with such conditions. The article by a young RSF volunteer was written for a local publication, but merited a wider audience. Our Scientific Meeting is always attended so it is pleasing that there was a 39% return for Deputy Academic Convener nominations, electing Richard Reading to take over and help Mary Rudolf with the ASM in Reading. For those who have a project they are working on with their local community, but do not have time or resources to submit papers, the CATCH Poster prize will run again.

Regarding this publication, Margaret Barker has suggested “gold, silver, etc” as names for our editions, which will be tied to the EC meetings. Hers was the only suggestion are there any more out there?
