From the EditorOur theme in this edition continues
to try to
encapsulate what Community Paediatrics is all
about. After discussion at our last Executive
meeting, I asked a colleague who moved from
hospital to community to reflect on the
differences. I know that he hadn’t found it any
easier, but certainly different (p13).
It’s been interesting to read two different doctors’
reviews of the same book. Jo Lewis, who is one
of our trainee representatives, reviewed ‘Difficult
Consultations with Adolescents’ and sent in his
article (p15) on the same day that I read the GP
review in the BMJ. The GP reviewer felt that
“Bridging the generations is an impossible task.”
Jo felt that “this book helps one think about way of
talking with adolescents and recognising their
needs.” This illustrates for me the central issue of
our speciality: there often isn’t an easy way to
deliver care to children and young people with
long term needs including mental health issues,
but we should still try.
I’m sure that the AGM in Reading, with its theme
of ‘Children’s Emotional Health’, will help to
stimulate discussion about this. Don’t forget to
enter a poster for the CATCH prize if you have
a local initiative that has worked for the children
in your local community.
In his column David Vickers
mentions input from members.
If you would like to send
examples of good practice /
innovative approaches to the
NSF to me, then I’ll start a new
section in BACCH News.
