The 10 Year Health Plan has a lot riding on it : is the NHS broken?
The government has been saying for the past year that the NHS is broken, backed by an investigation in 2024 by Lord Darzi that comprehensively highlighted a wide range of problems, and public satisfaction with the NHS at an all-time low. The plan leans into that rhetoric – stating that ‘the choice for the NHS is stark: reform or die’.
If you accept the government’s diagnosis that the NHS is broken, then this new plan needs to provide the public and those working in the health system with hope that it can be ‘fixed’, by setting out a strong and positive vision as well as a credible roadmap for how it could happen.
