The Tic Service at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is a National Specialist Service that cares for children and young people up to the age of 17 years. We have a specialist multi-disciplinary team that works closely with other departments within GOSH and routinely shares the care of children with local services. There is a strong research collaboration between GOSH, University College London and other Tourette syndrome clinics in the UK. We have an international reputation for clinical research into treatments for Tourette syndrome.

Specialist training:

Behavioural treatment for tics is used as the treatment for children and adults with tics and Tourette syndrome (TS). There is a shortage of therapists trained to deliver this treatment for people with tics and TS, and so to address this, the Tic service at Great Ormond Street Hospital has put together a new 1-day advanced training package for clinicians in the UK and internationally. The advanced training will focus on treating individuals with co-occurring conditions, young children and complex considerations around medication.

What the training will provide:

  • A one-day training course suitable for professionals from disciplines such as Psychology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Neurology.
  • The training will be most helpful for those with training and experience of delivering Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and behavioural therapy with children and those who have attended a Core training in behavioural therapy for tics delivered by our team or other specialists.
  • The course will include information about how to adapt treatment for complex cases, including patients with co-occurring conditions, and also modifications for treating young children. We will include case studies for clinicians working with cognitively vulnerable children, such as those with intellectual disability as a way of demonstrating use of functional analyses.
  • The course will contain  training videos, demonstrations with children with tics, materials to use post-training and a certificate of attendance.
    Who should attend:

Healthcare professionals from disciplines such as Psychology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Neurology who have some experience working with young people who have tics.
