Introduction

Participants will explore the functions of self-harm and the distress beneath the behaviour, while challenging common myths, stigma and societal attitudes. The course considers risk, vulnerability and protective factors, alongside self-harm through trauma-informed, neuro-affirming and culturally responsive lenses. Participants will develop an understanding of the adolescent brain, emotional regulation and the Window of Tolerance, as well as the relationship between selfharm and suicide. They will learn to recognise signs of distress, including hidden presentations, and develop skills for compassionate conversations, evidence-informed intervention, personalised coping strategies, safety planning and collaborative support. The course also considers working effectively with families while maintaining professional wellbeing.
